Healthy UCD: Embedding Wellbeing, Prevention and Participation Across University Life

University College Dublin (UCD) has placed wellbeing at the heart of its institutional culture through Healthy UCD, a whole-university initiative aligned with the Healthy Campus Charter and international best practice in health-promoting universities. Healthy UCD recognises that mental health and wellbeing are not standalone services, but shared responsibilities embedded across learning, teaching, research, policy, and campus life.

Healthy UCD adopts a preventive, inclusive and participatory approach, supporting students, staff and the wider university community to thrive academically, professionally and personally. The initiative integrates mental health promotion, physical wellbeing, social connection, sustainability and equity, ensuring that wellbeing is embedded across everyday university practices rather than addressed only at points of crisis.

A core strength of Healthy UCD is its cross-campus collaboration model. Academic units, professional services, student bodies and external stakeholders work together to co-design actions that respond to real needs on campus. This approach ensures that wellbeing initiatives are evidence-based, inclusive and responsive to the diverse experiences of students and staff.

Within this ecosystem, UCD has been actively contributing to European collaboration through initiatives such as the MINDGUARD Erasmus+ project, which complements Healthy UCD’s mission by strengthening prevention, early recognition and staff capacity in higher education mental health. Insights from national research conducted at UCD highlight a growing demand for structured training, clearer pathways to support, and innovative digital tools that empower staff and students to respond confidently to mental health challenges.

Healthy UCD addresses these needs by:
Promoting mental health literacy and reducing stigma through awareness campaigns, workshops and community dialogue
Supporting staff and students with accessible resources, signposting and skills-based training
Embedding wellbeing into teaching and learning, recognising the role of assessment design, workload balance and inclusive pedagogy
Encouraging social connection and belonging, particularly for first-year students, international communities and under-represented groups
Leveraging digital and innovative approaches, including online platforms and immersive learning tools, to scale support and engagement

Importantly, Healthy UCD aligns with national and European priorities on mental health in higher education, recognising the long-term impact of COVID-19, digital transformation and evolving academic pressures. Rather than focusing solely on treatment, the initiative emphasises prevention, early intervention and empowerment, equipping individuals and communities with the skills to recognise distress, offer support and seek help when needed.

Healthy UCD also contributes to UCD’s broader commitments to equality, diversity and inclusion, ensuring that wellbeing strategies are culturally sensitive, accessible and inclusive of different lived experiences. Feedback from students and staff consistently highlights the value of visible institutional commitment, leadership support and opportunities for co-creation.
Looking ahead, Healthy UCD continues to evolve as a living framework—one that integrates research, practice and policy to create a campus where wellbeing is embedded into everyday university life. Through ongoing collaboration, innovation and evidence-informed action, UCD aims to foster a resilient, compassionate and healthy academic community.
