Paving the Way for Student Well-Being: Marking a Milestone in MindGuard’s Training Programme Evaluation & Looking Ahead to Piloting

Mental health and well-being in higher education (HE) are critical priorities that demand structured, innovative, and deeply empathetic interventions. As part of the Erasmus+ MindGuard project, Work Package (WP) 3 has reached a major milestone: the comprehensive development and evaluation of our interactive, blended learning Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training programmes tailored specifically for university students and faculty/staff.

Following a thorough transnational review involving master trainers and consultation group experts across our partner organisations (including the University of Groningen, University College Dublin, University of Nicosia, Institute of Development, CARDET 360, and All Digital), the results are in—and the response is overwhelmingly positive!

Exceptional Feedback and High Satisfaction Rates

Both internal evaluations and expert consultations demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm for the training modules, validating their practical utility, relevance, and pedagogical strength:

· Master Trainer Virtual Sessions: Achieved an overall satisfaction rate of 88.4% (Mean: 4.42/5.00), with participants praising the clarity of project objectives (96.8%) and structured walkthroughs.

· Student Training Programme Piloting: Evaluated by expert consultation groups with an outstanding overall mean score of 4.83 out of 5.00 (96.6% satisfaction rate). Reviewers highlighted its accessibility, practical peer-support guidance, and realistic university scenarios.

· Faculty & Staff Training Programme Piloting: Achieved an even higher overall mean score of 4.84 out of 5.00 (96.8% satisfaction rate). Experts commended the modules for establishing clear professional boundaries while promoting compassionate, empathetic student engagement.

Core Strengths: Bridging Theory with Real-World Practice

Reviewers and experts praised the programmes for transforming complex psychological concepts into actionable, everyday tools. Key highlights include:

· Evidence-Based & Structured Frameworks: The clear step-by-step approach—from recognising early signs of mental distress to applying the Recognise-Respond-Refer and MHFA action plans—equips university communities to shift from a reactive stance to proactive mental health advocacy.

· Creating a Community of Care: The modules successfully strike a balance between empowering students as initial points of peer support and guiding faculty and staff on how to intervene effectively while respecting professional boundaries.

· Human-Centred Innovation: Grounded in real-life academic challenges, the curriculum sets a high standard for inclusivity, cultural competence, and digital well-being.

Continuous Improvement: Listening to Our Experts

True to our commitment to excellence, our reviewers also provided valuable insights and suggestions to make the programmes even more flexible and engaging. Moving forward, we are exploring several constructive ideas to enhance the experience of faculty, staff, and students.

📅 What’s Next? The Piloting Phase with Students and Faculty/Staff

With the evaluation phase successfully validating our content and exceeding project indicators (achieving over 90% partner satisfaction against our >80% target), our next major stage is official piloting with students and faculty/staff across our Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

This upcoming phase will bring the training directly into live academic environments, allowing real students and staff to experience the blended learning modules firsthand.

We invite our entire academic community to embrace this positive momentum. Together, we are building a safer, more resilient, and deeply supportive HE environment where everyone can succeed.
