As part of the Erasmus+ MindGuard project, a specialized “Guide and resources for university staff and educators” was developed to fill this exact gap in academic contexts. Selected experts across all project partners, including RUG, UCD, UNIC, CARDET360, IoD, and AD, engaged in a transnational evaluation, showing unanimously that the MindGuard Guide is an effective and pedagogically sound “one-stop shop” toolkit for university staff.

High satisfaction and concrete frameworks

Both internal and external evaluators gave the MindGuard Guide overwhelmingly positive reviews. The satisfaction scores typically ranged between 8 to 10 out of 10 with the reviewers praising the Guide’s five-step framework:

· Awareness

· Training

· Systems

· Normalisation

· Sustainability

Evaluators highlighted that this clear, step-by-step structure helps translate complex psychological concepts into actionable steps. The document balances theory with practice, providing university staff with easy-to-implement techniques to navigate 26 specific mental health challenges commonly found in real-life higher education contexts. Furthermore, the inclusion of the ‘Recognise-Respond-Refer’ model ensures that educators can confidently support students while upholding professional boundaries.

Balancing digital innovation with a community of care

MindGuard is charasterised by an innovative digital solution in training, featuring Virtual Reality (VR) and scenario-based learning. Evaluators viewed this approach as a powerful mechanism that couples human-centred innovation with the possibilites of tech-driven immersive training. With this guide we move away from reaction to proactiveness, encouraging universities to establish a sustainable “community of care” through collaboration among leadership, academic staff, and students.

Future enhancement

While there is consensus that the Guide is ready for implementation, the evaluation gathered highly constructive feedback for potential enhancements in the future:

·university staff face severe time constraints; thus, evaluators suggested introducing 2-to-3-page summaries and quick-reference tools.

· some initial feedback showed that the exact relationship between the VR learning platform, learning objectives, and the text scenarios could be made more explicit.

· reviewers recommended enriching the introductory and background data with relatable stories or short anecdotes to complement the statistics.

What’s next?

To be consistent in our rollout phase, the project will maintain the current version of the Guide as a stable reference framework. The expert suggestions will be a roadmap for future updates, interactive webinars, and targeted training sessions.

Ultimately, the transnational evaluation proves that the MindGuard Guide is a highly adaptable resource with the potential for sustainable impact on mental health support across diverse European higher education institutions.

We invite you to explore it firsthand.
