Universities are increasingly recognising that student wellbeing is fundamental not only to academic success but also to creating inclusive, supportive, and resilient learning environments.

This growing recognition is reflected in the newly published Mental Health Framework developed through the Inclusive Higher Education (PLAR-U-PAGs) initiative. The framework provides higher education institutions with practical guidance, self-assessment tools, and strategic recommendations for embedding mental health across university structures and policies.

Rather than viewing mental health as the responsibility of counselling services alone, the framework promotes a whole-institution approach, recognising that every member of the university community—including academic staff, professional services, institutional leaders, and students—plays an important role in creating a mentally healthy campus.

This vision closely aligns with the objectives of the MINDGUARD Erasmus+ project, where University College Dublin (UCD) leads the development of innovative Virtual Reality (VR) solutions designed to strengthen mental health awareness and preparedness across higher education.

Moving from strategy to practice

Institutional frameworks provide an essential roadmap for universities by identifying priorities, policies, and organisational structures that support student wellbeing. However, successful implementation requires more than strategic planning—it requires people to develop the confidence and practical skills to respond effectively when students experience mental health challenges.

This is where MINDGUARD provides significant added value.

The project complements policy frameworks by developing practical, evidence-informed educational resources that enable faculty, staff, and students to learn through realistic, immersive experiences.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration across European partner institutions, MINDGUARD is developing:

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training programmes specifically adapted for higher education environments.

An immersive Virtual Reality learning platform that allows users to experience realistic mental health scenarios within safe, controlled environments.

A comprehensive Mental Health Guide designed to support universities in strengthening institutional capacity.

Awareness-raising and dissemination activities that promote understanding, empathy, and early intervention throughout university communities.

Together, these resources aim to improve mental health literacy while reducing stigma and encouraging supportive behaviours across campus.

Why Virtual Reality matters

Traditional mental health training often relies on lectures, presentations, or written case studies. While valuable, these methods can struggle to prepare participants for the complexity and emotional reality of real-life interactions.

Virtual Reality offers a new approach.

By placing learners inside carefully designed, interactive scenarios, VR enables participants to experience challenging conversations, recognise behavioural cues, and practise appropriate responses in psychologically safe environments.

The immersive nature of VR helps participants develop:

greater empathy towards individuals experiencing mental health difficulties;

improved confidence when initiating supportive conversations;

enhanced decision-making skills in sensitive situations;

practical experience without exposing real individuals to risk.

These experiential learning opportunities can bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, making training more engaging, memorable, and impactful.

UCD’s role in the MINDGUARD project

Within the MINDGUARD consortium, University College Dublin leads the development of the project’s innovative VR platform.

Drawing upon UCD’s expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction, Extended Reality (XR), and digital learning technologies, the team is designing immersive learning experiences that support Mental Health First Aid principles while remaining grounded in evidence-based educational practice.

The platform is being developed using participatory design methodologies, ensuring that educators, professional staff, students, and mental health experts contribute directly to the creation and evaluation of training scenarios.

This collaborative approach helps ensure that the final platform reflects the real challenges experienced across European higher education institutions while remaining adaptable to diverse educational contexts.

Building healthier university communities

The publication of the Inclusive Higher Education Mental Health Framework represents another important milestone in the growing international movement towards embedding wellbeing within higher education.

Strategic frameworks provide institutions with the guidance needed to develop comprehensive mental health policies, while projects such as MINDGUARD demonstrate how innovative technologies can transform those policies into practical learning experiences.

By combining evidence-based guidance, institutional commitment, Mental Health First Aid principles, and immersive digital technologies, universities can move beyond reactive approaches towards proactive cultures that promote wellbeing, resilience, and inclusion.

Creating mentally healthy universities is not the responsibility of one department or one professional group—it is a shared responsibility across the entire academic community.

Through collaboration, innovation, and research, initiatives such as the Inclusive Higher Education Mental Health Framework and the MINDGUARD Erasmus+ project are helping higher education institutions across Europe build campuses where mental wellbeing is embedded into everyday university life, empowering both students and staff to thrive.

Learn more

Inclusive
