Scaling Up University Wellbeing: MindGuard Successfully Completes its Master Trainers’ Training Programme

The MindGuard project has reached a pivotal milestone in its mission to foster healthier, more resilient higher education environments. On Monday, July 6th, 2026, the consortium successfully conducted its online Master Trainers’ Training, officially launching the implementation phase of the innovative MindGuard Training Programme.

Led by the University of Nicosia, this intensive session successfully equipped 22 dedicated Master Trainers nominated across the project’s 6 partner organisations. Armed with advanced pedagogical tools and practical skills, these trainers are now prepared to act as vital Mental Health First Aiders and spearhead the upcoming rollout of the MindGuard curriculum on their respective campuses.

🧠 Moving from Guidance to Action

This training marks an exciting transition for the MindGuard project. Following the successful development of the MindGuard Guide for Staff and Educators and the recent internal usability testing of the project’s custom Virtual Reality (VR) platform, the consortium is translating research into real-world action.

With mental health challenges increasingly affecting European university communities, the MindGuard project champions the power of prevention and early intervention. By boosting mental health literacy and teaching practical support skills, the project aims to cultivate inclusive campus cultures where wellbeing is a shared responsibility.

👥 A Dual Pathway for Campus-Wide Support

The Master Trainers were trained on a comprehensive, evidence-based curriculum designed for two distinct university demographics:

  1. Faculty and Staff Training

A six-module programme designed to help university staff create psychologically safe environments. Key focus areas include:

  • Recognising early signs of psychological distress in students.
  • Communicating with empathy, confidence, and boundaries.
  • Applying core Mental Health First Aid principles during crises.
  • Navigating diverse student needs and promoting inclusion.
  • Student Training

A peer-focused programme tailored to empower students to look out for themselves and one another. Key focus areas include:

  • Reducing mental health stigma and increasing awareness.
  • Building personal resilience and healthy coping strategies.
  • Facilitating supportive peer-to-peer conversations.
  • Navigating digital wellbeing and knowing when to seek professional help.

🛠️ Immersive Learning via Virtual Reality

A unique highlight of the MindGuard ecosystem is the integration of cutting-edge technology. Trainers explored custom VR scenarios designed by the consortium. These immersive environments allow participants to step into realistic campus situations, practicing empathy, active listening, and problem-solving within a safe, simulated space.

📅 What’s Next? Road to the Launch

The completion of the Master Trainers’ Training sets off a chain reaction of positive campus impact.

  • August 2026 – January 2027: Partner institutions will launch the pilot delivery of the MindGuard Training Programme directly to students, faculty, and staff members.

The feedback gathered during these upcoming localised pilots will be instrumental in refining the training materials and VR tools, ensuring that MindGuard leaves a lasting, sustainable legacy of care in European higher education.
